Yesterday, we shared the story of Elijah and how he is looking for a new job in secret. When asked in an interview if anything bad was happening at is current job (because Elijah was the third person from his company that has been interviewed), he responded “no”. (To read the full situation, CLICK HERE to access yesterday's newsletter.) We asked our readers, 'What Would YOU Do?" - and got some EXCELLENT responses. Here's what they said:

Instead of just saying no, he should state first that while he cannot speak for others in the same company, he is looking to build on his experience, expand his knowledge (in whatever his profession is) and that he follows the work that XYZ company has been doing and admires their progress, values and mission and continue with how his skills can solve their problems, without mentioning the real reason. Its never ok to be negative about your current or previous company, instead, focus on your strengths and the positives you envision at this new opportunity.

Elijah should start with sharing what his organization does really well (maybe 2 to 3 things). Perhaps it can be the parts of his work that energize or inspire him. He should then be honest and share some of the things he would love to accomplish in a new role. As the story mentions, it's more about Elijah's aspirations and less about the company itself so his focus should be there. Using terms like "lifelong learner" would be great in this scenario. This is a good tactic even when you don't like your job. Focusing on the positive and what you can be proactive about will take you further.
