Find out why 200K+ engineers read The Code twice a week

Staying behind on tech trends can be a career killer.

But let’s face it, no one has hours to spare every week trying to stay updated.

That’s why over 200,000 engineers at companies like Google, Meta, and Apple read The Code twice a week.

Here’s why it works:

  • No fluff, just signal – Learn the most important tech news delivered in just two short emails.

  • Supercharge your skills – Get access to top research papers and resources that give you an edge in the industry.

  • See the future first – Discover what’s next before it hits the mainstream, so you can lead, not follow.

Why Your Network Won't Help You Find a Job Right Now

I keep hearing the same thing from job seekers right now: "I'll just tap my network." And every time I hear it, I cringe a little. Not because it's a bad instinct. Networking has always been solid career advice. But right now, in this market? It's not working the way people think it is, and I'm seeing it play out in real time with the people I work with every single day.

Here's what's actually happening out there.

People Are "Job Hugging"—and It's Killing Your Chances

There's a term for what's going on right now: job hugging. Look it up. It's real, and it's everywhere.

When the job market gets tough, people hold onto their positions with white knuckles. They're scared. They're uncertain. And the last thing they want to do is go out on a limb for someone else. Think about it from their perspective: what if they recommend you and you end up outperforming them? What if they vouch for you and it blows up? What if their manager questions their judgment?

So what do they do instead? They smile. They nod. They say, "Send me your resume!" And then...nothing. They don't follow through. Not because they're bad people, but because they're in survival mode. They simply don't have the bandwidth to champion you right now.

I've watched this pattern repeat itself every time the market tightens. And right now, it's one of the most common things I'm hearing from job seekers: "JT, I've been reaching out to everyone I know and nobody's helping me." Yes. That tracks. That's exactly what I'd expect.

The Real Problem: It's Not Who You Know—It's Who Knows You

Here's the shift that most people haven't made yet, and it's a big one.

Your network is made up of people who already know you. But the hiring managers who can actually give you a job? They're strangers. And right now, in this market, the goal is to get in front of those strangers, not to keep circling back to the same people who are already overwhelmed and scared.

Think about how job searching has evolved over the decades. People used to drop resumes off in person. Then job boards came along and changed everything. Then LinkedIn showed up and shifted the whole game again. Hiring always evolves. There's always a new wave.

We are right in the middle of the next one.

The Future of Job Searching Is About Marketing Yourself

The next big shift is about making yourself findable. Not just applying. Not just networking. Actually marketing yourself so that the right people can discover you.

This is what I call your PRO VOICE. It's not about claiming you're the best at what you do. It's about consistently putting your knowledge, your experience, and your perspective out into the world in a way that proves you're the real deal. Not a bot. Not a generic candidate. A capable, experienced human being who knows their stuff.

When you do that consistently, the AI-driven systems that are increasingly powering hiring will surface your name to the people looking for exactly what you offer. This is not some future possibility; it's happening right now.

What You Can Do Starting Today

I know this might feel like a big mindset shift. It is. But the job seekers who figure this out now are going to be miles ahead of everyone still refreshing their job board applications and waiting on LinkedIn connections to come through.

The old playbook is expiring. Job boards are already struggling, and I genuinely believe we're looking at a pretty dramatic shift in the not-too-distant future. The job seekers who will thrive are the ones who learn how to market themselves—how to build and leverage their PRO VOICE—before everyone else catches on.
