Why You Shouldn't Use AI to Write Your Resume (And What to Do Instead)

I recently asked talent acquisition specialists on LinkedIn what their biggest pet peeve is, and I got one response that really stood out to me. One person laid it all out there, and it confirmed exactly what I've been warning people about for years. Recruiters are seeing candidates who look incredible on paper. Polished resumes, tight language, all the right keywords. And then those same candidates get into the interview room and can't back up a single thing they wrote.
You know why? AI wrote it for them.
And now the company isn’t going to hire them because they lied. Not now, not in the future—that door is closed. I’m not trying to sound dramatic. That’s exactly what is happening right now.
The Real Problem With AI Resumes
I get it. Running your resume through AI feels productive. It makes you sound more polished. It gives you a little confidence boost. I understand why people do it.
But here's the thing: if you can't walk into an interview and speak intelligently about every single line on that document, you're not prepared. You're actually less prepared because now you've got a resume that oversells you and an interview that proves it.
I don't let any of my clients do this. Not one. And it's not because I'm anti-technology. It's because I've seen what happens, and it isn't pretty.
What You Should Be Doing Instead
The candidates who are actually winning right now, the ones getting recruiters sliding into their LinkedIn DMs, aren't the ones with the fanciest resumes. They're the ones with a crystal-clear brand.
Here's the concept I built everything around: your UVA, your unique value add.
Your UVA is the specific thing you bring to the table that nobody else does quite like you. It's your professional superpower. And when you truly understand it, you can walk into any conversation, any interview, any recruiter call, and own it completely. No fumbling. No over-explaining. No getting caught off guard.
Most people (and I see this constantly with my coaching clients) are genuinely not clear on what makes them different. That vagueness? That's exactly why they're not getting the jobs or the promotions they want. Clarity on your UVA is the difference between being forgettable and being the obvious choice.
Why LinkedIn Is Your Secret Weapon
Here's where this really gets exciting. When you understand your UVA, you stop chasing job postings and start attracting opportunities.
Your LinkedIn profile becomes a magnet when it clearly communicates what you do, who you do it for, and why you're the best at it. Recruiters are searching LinkedIn every single day. They're not waiting for resumes to get submitted; they're looking for people whose profiles scream, "This is exactly who I need."
When a recruiter reaches out to you on LinkedIn, you're already warmed up. You know your brand. You know your value. The conversation flows naturally because you've done the internal work. No resume needed in that moment, just confidence and clarity.
That's the strategy. Stop applying and hoping. Start positioning and attracting.
How to Figure Out Your UVA
Start by asking yourself: What am I genuinely great at? What problems do I solve better than most people? What do colleagues or managers always come to me for?
Then think about your biggest accomplishments and look for the through line. What skill or strength shows up again and again? That pattern is your brand. That's your UVA taking shape.
And here's the key piece: your brand has to be authentic. Not what you think sounds impressive, not what AI spits out when you paste in your job history. It should connect to real passion and real energy. When you talk about your UVA, it should feel natural.
Ready to Get Clear on Your Brand?
If you're sitting here thinking, "I genuinely don't know what my UVA is," that’s okay. That's one of the most common things I hear. And it's exactly why we built the UVA quiz inside Work It DAILY. The quiz will identify your top three career personas and your communication style through a comprehensive assessment. You’ll be presented with different workplace scenarios to identify how you create unique value at work.
When you join, you'll get access to the quiz, plus the chance to work directly with our coaches to build out your full LinkedIn strategy and job search game plan, personalized to you. No generic advice. Just a real strategy that you can actually stand behind.
