Why So Many Job Postings Are a Complete Waste of Your Time

I've been a career coach for 20 years. I've seen a lot of things change in the job market. But one thing that has gotten significantly worse over the last few years? Fake job postings. Or more accurately, real job postings that were never actually going to be filled by anyone who applied to them.

If you've been on Indeed, LinkedIn, or any job board lately and thought, I am literally perfect for this role, only to send your resume into the void and hear absolutely nothing, I need you to understand something. It might not be you. It might be the job itself.

Let me explain.

There's a Law You've Never Heard Of—And It's Affecting Your Job Search

In 1974, Congress passed something called the Vietnam Era Veterans' Readjustment Assistance Act, or VEVRAA. The short version: any company that holds a federal government contract over a certain dollar amount is legally required to post its open positions. Those postings then get scraped at the state level, picked up by job boards, and spread across the internet.

So a huge chunk of what you're seeing out there? Those jobs are being posted out of legal obligation, not because the company is actually out there reviewing resumes and looking to hire from the applicant pool.

Here's what makes this even more frustrating: nowhere in this law does it say these companies have to review your application. Even if a company already knows they're going to hire internally or already has a candidate in mind, they can still post the job, collect applications, hire whoever they wanted all along, and never say a word to you about it.

You never had a shot. And you had no way of knowing that.

Stop the Insanity

This is something I talk about with my members constantly: job seekers are working so hard, tailoring resumes, writing cover letters, refreshing their inboxes, for jobs that were never going to pan out. That energy and time deserve to go somewhere that actually works.

While it might not seem like it, hiring is happening. Companies are still bringing people on board. But they're not doing it the way they used to. They're doing it through what I call quiet hiring, meaning recruiters are going directly to LinkedIn, using the platform's algorithm to surface candidates, and reaching out to them directly. They're bypassing the job boards entirely.

LinkedIn Is Where You Actually Need to Be

LinkedIn has over 1.3 billion users and is growing. Recruiters have access to a sophisticated search tool, and they're using it every single day to find people like you. But here's the thing: if you don't understand how to optimize your profile, and, more importantly, how to post on LinkedIn in a way that actually triggers the algorithm, you are not going to rank high enough in those search results to get found.

This is the new normal for job search. Posting your resume and praying on job boards is not a strategy anymore. You have to pivot to where the activity is actually happening.
