Why I Quit Being a Job Search Career Coach in 2026 (Here’s What I’m Teaching Instead)

I quit being a job search coach. After 20 years. In one of the worst job markets we've ever seen, I’ve decided to quit my job, but probably not in the way you are thinking. I want to explain exactly why, because it’s probably the most helpful thing I've ever done.

How I Got Here in the First Place

I started my career in HR and recruiting. And pretty quickly, I noticed something that honestly broke my heart a little. Really talented people, people with solid skills and great experience, weren't getting hired. Not because they weren't qualified, but because nobody had ever taught them how to market themselves. With a little coaching on their resume, their interview presence, and their overall approach, they could land those jobs.

So I left corporate America and jumped to the other side. That was over 20 years ago. I built Work It DAILY into a large career coaching platform, and we've helped tens of thousands of people find new, better-paying jobs. That work has meant everything to me.

But this month? I walked away from it. And I need you to understand why.

The Hard Truth Nobody in My Industry Will Say Out Loud

Jobs as we know them are dying. I don't say that to scare you. I say it because I've been in this industry long enough to see exactly what's happening, and I can't in good conscience keep pretending otherwise.

Here's the reality: I can't coach you to fix your resume anymore, because everyone's using AI-generated resumes and bots. Recruiters don't trust them. I can't teach you to work the ATS, the applicant tracking system, when 10,000 people are applying for the same role, and your chances of even being seen are essentially zero. And most importantly, I can't keep telling people to chase a full-time job with benefits when I know those jobs are going away.

Companies don't want more employees. They want fewer. Employees are expensive and, from a corporate standpoint, unpredictable. Technology is replacing people every single day. It's the Hunger Games out there right now. Everyone is fighting to hold onto their own seat, nobody is helping each other, and nobody is looking up long enough to see what's actually being built around them.

The New Economy Nobody Is Talking About

Here's what I find fascinating, and frankly, exciting. While everyone's scrambling for the scraps of the old economy, a completely new one is being built. And it doesn't run on full-time jobs with benefits.

We are entering what historians will eventually call a second Renaissance, a digital Renaissance. Think about what the original Renaissance was: people learning new things, trying new things, creating in ways that had never been done before. That's where we are right now. And just like back then, the people who thrive will be the ones who learn to work for themselves, not for a single company.

The idea of getting one job, one employer, one paycheck, that model started in the 1850s. It trained generations of people to believe it was the only way to live. But it was never the only way. And right now, it's not even a reliable way.

Income Security Over Job Security

This is the shift I'm dedicating myself to now: helping people learn how to monetize their minds.

You have years, maybe decades, of expertise, experience, and knowledge sitting inside you. That is an asset. And there are more ways than ever to turn that asset into real, sustainable income that doesn't depend on one company deciding to keep you around.

Job security doesn't exist anymore. But income security? That's absolutely within reach when you understand how this new economy works and how to position yourself in it.
