Reclaim Your Power When Your Employer Makes Empty Promises
Tired of Empty Promises from Your Employer?
Have you been let down by your employer over and over again? Are they constantly giving you the runaround and not following through on commitments? It's time to take back control of the situation and stop being a passive participant in this broken partnership.
As a 20-year career coaching veteran, I've seen this scenario play out countless times. Your employer has lost respect for you, and the relationship is no longer equal. But you have the power to change that—you just have to be willing to assert yourself.
Prepare Your Case
The first step is to make sure that what you're seeking—whether it's a raise, promotion, or other career advancement—is still reasonable and attainable in the current job market. Do your research to confirm that your skills and experience are in demand and that you could find similar opportunities elsewhere if needed.
Next, create a detailed document that outlines two key things:
All the tasks and responsibilities you were originally hired to do.
All the additional work you've taken on since then.
This is your "unique value add"—it demonstrates the full scope of your contributions and how you've gone above and beyond. Having this information clearly documented will be crucial for your upcoming conversation.
Have the Tough Conversation
When you're ready, schedule a meeting with your boss. This is where it's critical that you remain calm and composed. I know it's frustrating, but losing your cool will only weaken your position. Channel your inner James Bond—cool, collected, and in control.
Sit down with your boss and calmly walk them through your documented list of responsibilities. Explain that you've repeatedly asked for the things you were promised, and the relationship no longer feels like an equitable partnership. Then, ask directly: "Can we get a firm due date on when these items will be addressed?"
There are three possible outcomes here:
They agree to resolve the issues and provide a clear timeline.
They offer a partial solution, like addressing some but not all of your requests.
They flat-out say they can't deliver on their promises.
No matter which response you get, you're in a better position. If they agree to a timeline, great—hold them accountable. If they can't or won't fulfill their end of the bargain, you now know the truth and can start planning your next move.
Don't Wait for Them—Start Looking
Even if your boss seems willing to make good on their promises, don't just sit back and wait. Start quietly looking for other job opportunities that better align with your worth and career goals. You can't rely on your current employer to suddenly transform into a model partner.
If they fail to deliver on their commitments by the agreed-upon date, you'll be ready to move on. Reclaim your power, self-respect, and control over your career. You deserve an employer who values you and follows through on their word.
