The 3-Step Visibility Funnel That Gets Recruiters to Find You

If you've been sending out applications, refreshing your inbox, and hearing absolutely nothing back, it's not because you're unqualified. It's because you're invisible.

And I don't mean that harshly. I mean it literally. The way most people are job searching right now, recruiters simply cannot find them. And that's the real problem we need to fix.

I've been coaching professionals for over 20 years, and what I'm seeing in today's market is a fundamental shift in how hiring actually works. The old playbook—polish your resume, apply online, wait—is broken. Not "less effective." Broken. And the sooner you accept that, the sooner you can start doing something that actually works.

That something is what I call the 3-Step Visibility Funnel.

Why "It's Not Who You Know" Is Outdated Advice

We've all heard it a thousand times: it's not what you know, it's who you know. I want to update that for you. In today's job market, it's not who you know—it's who knows you.

That's the shift. You need total strangers, specifically, the right recruiters and hiring managers, to discover you, become interested in you, and reach out. That's the funnel. And it has three steps.

Step 1: Visibility — Make Them Know You Exist

Here's what's happening right now that most job seekers don't realize: companies have largely stopped posting jobs online. Why? Because when they do, they get tens of thousands of applicants. It's overwhelming, it's expensive to manage, and frankly, it's not producing the quality hires they want.

So, what are they doing instead? They're getting on LinkedIn and searching for people.

Recruiters are using LinkedIn's search tools to find candidates who match what they need, and they're reaching out directly, without ever posting a job listing. That means if you're not showing up in those searches, you don't exist to them. Period.

The fix? You need to be creating content on LinkedIn. It doesn’t have to be anything crazy or cheesy or uncomfortable. It just has to be the right kind of posts that signal to the algorithm, and to recruiters, exactly who you are and what you do. That's how you get found. That's step one.

Step 2: Attention — Hold It Once You Have It

Getting found is only half the battle. Once a recruiter lands on your profile or sees your content, you have about three seconds to make them stop scrolling.

This is where most people drop off. They get visible, but then their profile is vague, their posts are scattered, and there's no clear signal that says "this is the person you're looking for."

The goal in step two is to put the right information in front of them; content that validates your expertise, communicates your value, and makes them think, "Okay, I need to learn more about this person." When your LinkedIn feed is working correctly, it's not just a resume. It's a trust-building machine that does the selling for you while you sleep.

Step 3: Conversion — Make It Easy for Them to Reach Out

This is the step people forget entirely, and it costs them opportunities every single day.

You can be visible. You can be compelling. But if a recruiter lands on your profile and doesn't have a clear, easy path to contact you, or worse, doesn't think you're open to new opportunities, they'll move on.

One thing you need to do right now: go into your LinkedIn settings and turn on the feature that notifies recruiters you're open to being contacted. And I want to be very clear, this is not the green "Open to Work" banner. That's a different thing entirely. I'm talking about a setting inside your profile that signals to recruiters specifically (and privately) that you're available. Once that's on, combined with strong visibility content, you will start seeing inbound messages from recruiters you've never met.

That's the conversion. That's when the funnel is working.
