The #1 Job Interview Tip I Give Every Client (And Why It Works Every Time)

Want to know what question I get asked more than any other?

"J.T., what's the ONE tip you can give me right before I walk into a job interview?"

I used to try to cram everything into a quick 30-second answer, but the truth is, the most powerful tip I can give you deserves more than that. Because once you understand this concept and learn how to use it, you'll completely transform the way you interview. AND it will dramatically increase your chances of landing the job with better pay.

So here it is: You need to provide your UVA—your unique value add.

Let me break down what that means and why it's so important.

Stop Thinking Like an Employee, Start Thinking Like a Business

Here's what most people don't understand: You aren't just an employee or a job seeker. You're actually a business-of-one, selling your services to a customer—and that customer is your potential employer.

Once you shift your mindset to see yourself this way, everything changes.

As a business-of-one, you have features and benefits, just like any product or service. If you've ever worked in marketing, you know the difference. Features are the tangible things—your skills, your experience, all those qualifications that match up perfectly with the job description. You find a job posting, match yourself to the requirements, and think, "Great! I have all the features they're looking for."

But here's the problem: Nobody buys features. They buy benefits.

Features Don't Win Interviews… Benefits Do

Think about yourself as a consumer for a moment. When you buy something, you're not really buying the features; you're buying what those features will do for you. You're buying the benefits, the results, the transformation.

Your potential employer is no different.

They don't just want to hear that you check all the boxes and have all the right skills. They want to know how you're going to use those skills to benefit them. They want to understand your unique value add (your UVA).

Your UVA is the specific benefit you provide to an employer. It's how you utilize your features (skills and experience) to deliver real, tangible results for them.

Speaking the Language Employers Actually Want to Hear

When you understand your UVA and can articulate it clearly, you go into every interview with a completely different mindset. Instead of just answering questions about what you've done, you're answering from the perspective of "this is how this will benefit you."

Here are three powerful examples of benefits that employers care about:

  • Solve problems – Show them exactly which problems you can solve

  • Alleviate pain – Demonstrate how you'll make their life easier

  • Save or make money – Prove your impact on the bottom line

When you can translate your experience using your UVA and frame your answers around these benefits, you absolutely shine in interviews. You're speaking their language. You're explaining exactly why they should pay you, and potentially pay you more than they originally budgeted for the role.

You Have More Power Than You Think

This is what I want you to understand: You have more power in the interview process than you realize. When you walk in prepared with a clear understanding of your UVA, you're not just another candidate hoping to get picked. You're a business-of-one, confidently presenting the specific value you bring to the table.

That confidence is palpable. That clarity is refreshing. And that approach is what gets people hired.

So before your next interview, take some time to really think about your unique value add. Don't just list your features. Dig deeper into the benefits you provide. How do you make things better? What problems do you solve? What's the measurable impact you create?
