Work It Daily

Hello Everyone & Happy Tuesday!

Last week a LinkedIn post made its way to our CEO, J.T. O’Donnell’s feed. It was the story of a job seeker who was scammed by a fake job posting. (You can read the full post HERE.) This story hit all of us at Work It DAILY really hard. Unfortunately, it was a good reminder that this is frequently happening to job seekers. In this current job market, it’s crucial to be on the lookout for these types of scams. Here are some tips to help you stay vigilant:

  1. Only apply to jobs through the company’s website/careers page. Avoid job boards and other websites.

  2. Make sure you speak with a real human at some point during the hiring process.

  3. NEVER give your bank information, SSN, or any other personally identifiable data to a company until you know the position is legit.

  4. Don’t hesitate to reach out to the company directly to ensure the position is real.

The thought of scammers taking advantage of stressed-out, worried, tired, scared, and vulnerable job seekers makes us sad & angry. But by providing these tips, we hope to help our audiences avoid becoming another victim.

Struggling to Find Jobs? Stop Wasting Time on Job Boards and Try This Instead

The Problem With Job Boards Today

Okay, let's talk about where you should be searching for jobs right now. Is it LinkedIn? Glassdoor? Indeed? The problem with most job boards is that they're filled with outdated, even bogus job postings. Many are just placeholders or scams, taking your money and lying to you.

Even when companies do post legitimate jobs, they get so many applicants that they have to take the listings down within hours or days. We've talked to so many companies who said they had over 100 applicants within 30 minutes of posting a job, and over 1,000 within 24 hours! They simply can't manage that volume of candidates.

The Better Way to Find Jobs

So, what's the better way to job hunt right now? The key is to stop being a "job seeker" and become a "job shopper" instead. Here's what that means:

  1. Make a list of all the companies you'd love to work for. These could be places you've interviewed with before, companies you know are hiring in your field, or businesses that align with your skills and interests.

  2. Go directly to those companies' career pages to see if they have any open roles. Don't just rely on job boards; apply directly on the company website.

  3. Reach out to people who work in the department or roles you're interested in. Ask them to help you navigate the hiring process and potentially connect you with the hiring manager.

Why This Strategy Works

You might be wondering, "Why isn't everyone doing this 'job shopping' approach?" Well, the truth is, most people don't want to put in the extra effort. They'd rather take the easy, lazy route of applying to jobs online.

But studies show that only 1-3% or 5 out of 250 online applicants even get a callback. That means there's a 97-99% chance you'll get rejected if you rely solely on job boards. And if you're not an exact match for the role, your chances of getting noticed drop to 0%.

That's why job shopping is so much more effective. When you proactively reach out to companies and build connections, you're putting yourself in front of decision-makers in a much more impactful way. You'll stand out from the crowd of online applicants and have a much better shot at landing interviews.

Get Started Today

Don't keep wasting time on job boards that aren't working. Shift your mindset and become a strategic "job shopper" instead. It might feel a little uncomfortable at first, but trust me, it's worth it.

Make that list of target companies, reach out to your network, and apply directly on their career sites. With a little extra effort, you'll be miles ahead of the competition.
