Yesterday, we shared the story of Robert and how he wants a different role in his company, but his boss won’t let him. (To read the full situation, CLICK HERE to access yesterday's newsletter.) We asked our readers, “What Would YOU Do?" - and got some EXCELLENT responses. Here's what they said:

I would ask my direct supervisor for a meeting to discuss his career growth within the company. At this meeting he should express his desire for upward mobility as well as acknowledging his value to his manager in his current role. He should suggest a plan whereby he begins training someone to fill his role with the goal that after he is no longer indispensable he can move on.

Robert isn't a piece of property. If he were my friend, I'd recommend that he apply anyway, either through the open posting or by submitting an application with HR. If he gets blocked by his current managers, I'd say have a long talk with HR and then start looking for a new company to be with.

I would start looking for a job elsewhere. I have had this experience. There is no way to negotiate or influence a group of people who have decided it is ethical to talk about you behind your back and decide your career path for you. They will always roadblock you. They will likely make it hard for you to move up in your department. I would stop asking about other roles and quietly make plans to leave.

Being laid off is probably one of the hardest experiences someone can have in their career.

It sucks! We get it, you no longer have a purpose when you’re laid off. Your skills and expertise were once needed by a company and then all of a sudden they don’t need you anymore. This might make you feel like you weren’t as valuable as you thought you were. It might also make you question if other companies will see you as a valuable employee.

These thoughts are totally normal and it’s okay to grieve the loss of your job. But just remember that as difficult as this may be, something positive might come out of it. A better opportunity is waiting for you!

Here are some tips to help you cope with being laid off, so you can start exploring new opportunities.

If you have been in an interview before, you were most likely asked one of the dreaded interview questions, specifically, “What are your strengths?” This is a real common one so, unfortunately, you aren’t going to avoid it (even though we all hate it). The way you answer this question is really important though. It might help you impress employers and stand out from other candidates. BUT.. if you typically start by saying “I think my strengths are…” you’re going to want to take some notes. ✍️
