🖊️QUIT Paying For Resume Writers!

Plus: Do employers really care about resume gaps?

Work It Daily

Hello Everyone & Happy Wednesday!

Today is International Equal Pay Day. This day represents the efforts being made to achieve equal pay for equal work all over the world. Data from the UN shows that for work of equal value, women only earn 77 cents for every dollar a man makes. And that gap widens for women who have children.

Resources We Recommend

Yesterday, we asked you what the most critical skill for career growth will be in the next 10 years. The majority of you said, drumroll please… Data Literacy & Analytics.

We thought this would be the perfect opportunity to talk about some of our favorite ways to learn data literacy & analytics. Below is a list of our top 4 resources:

  1. Brillant offers an interactive way to learn data, math, and analytics skills. We like to think of Brillant as the “Duolingo for data”.

  2. Coursera* provides data analytics certificates from top companies like IBM, Google, and Microsoft. These courses can take anywhere from 1-6 months to complete and are great for any level of learner.

  3. LinkedIn Learning provides a variety of courses for different skill levels and interests. If there is something other than data analytics that you want to upskill, LinkedIn Learning is a great resource too.

  4. DataCamp* offers 500+ courses and certifications to learn data & AI skills. They also provide the opportunity to learn coding languages like Python and SQL.

All four of these resources are a great way to get started on or to expand upon your data literacy & analytics journey. If you have an upskilling resource for data analytics that we haven’t mentioned, please share it with us by responding to this email. We love new recommendations.

Happy Learning!

The Hidden Dangers of Outsourcing Your Resume (And Why DIY is the Way to Go)

As a job seeker, you might be tempted to outsource your resume writing to a professional. After all, they're the experts, right? Wrong! As Work It DAILY's newsletter manager, I'm here to tell you why writing your own resume is not just a smart move, but an essential one for your career success.

The Resume Writer's Trap

Did you know, that when you pay someone to write your resume, their primary goal is to make you feel good about yourself? They want you to see that expensive price tag and think, "Wow, look at how amazing I sound!" But here's the kicker – that fancy, overblown resume isn't what recruiters and hiring managers want to see.

At Work It DAILY, we frequently have members join with resumes they paid hundreds or even thousands of dollars for a resume writer, only to discover they were completely useless. Some even had fonts and formatting that were getting them automatically rejected by applicant tracking systems. Talk about a costly mistake!

Why DIY is the Way to Go

So, why should you write your own resume? It's simple:

1. You know yourself best

2. You'll be able to speak confidently about every detail

3. You'll save money in the long run

When a recruiter calls you for an interview, you need to be able to discuss your resume inside and out. If someone else wrote it for you, you might struggle to explain certain points or elaborate on your experiences. By writing it yourself, you ensure that every word reflects your true skills and achievements.

The Work It DAILY Method: Learn Once, Use Forever

Remember, every job is temporary. Do you really want to shell out hundreds of dollars every time you need to update your resume? By learning to do it yourself, you're investing in a skill that will serve you throughout your entire career.

Need more convincing? Consider this: 74% of recruiters we surveyed preferred our resume format because it was easier to read. That's right – by following our simple method, you're giving yourself a significant advantage in the job market.
