The Internet Has Made It Almost Impossible to Get a Job By Applying Online
In today’s digital age, a majority of people have access to the internet. What does that mean for job seekers? Gone are the days when a simple online job application would reliably get your foot in the door. In today's highly competitive job market, applying online is often a waste of time. Let’s talk about why that is.
The Easy Apply Trap
I've been hearing this from our CEO and head career coach, J.T. O'Donnell, for years now. She explains that the "easy button" of online job applications has created a real problem for job seekers. Companies now receive thousands of applications in a matter of 24-48 hours for any given role.
Just recently, one of J.T.'s clients came to her saying there were only 22 applicants for a job. J.T. told the client to apply right away because she knew that number would skyrocket in no time. Sure enough, when the client checked back the next day, there were over 1,000 applicants.
The issue is that many of these applicants aren't even qualified. They're simply hitting the "easy apply" button without a second thought. It's become a mess—the online application process is flooded with unqualified candidates.
The New Reality of Job Searching
So, if applying online is a lost cause, what should job seekers do instead? At Work It DAILY, we believe the only way to get noticed in today's job market is to find a way to connect directly with the employer, rather than relying on the online application.
This is especially true for the more competitive, desirable jobs. If you're looking for an "easier" job where the employer is desperate to hire, the online application process may still work. But for the roles most job seekers want, you'll need to take a different approach.
Take the First Step
The key is to be willing to step out of your comfort zone and learn something new. As J.T. says, it requires putting yourself in "temporary productive discomfort." But it's the only way to start seeing the new reality of job searching and figuring out how to get the results you want.
Back-channeling is going to be your new best friend. If you’ve never heard us talk about the importance of back-channeling in your job search, THIS video is a great place to start. Say goodbye to the days of applying online and embrace this transformative job search technique.
If you're ready to learn more new job search strategies, I encourage you to follow J.T. and engage with her free content. Ask questions, participate in the live streams—let her guide you through that initial discomfort so you can start to master the skills you need.
