How to Stop Being Seen as Overqualified in Job Interviews
A Common Struggle š°
As the CEO and Head Career Coach here at Work It DAILY, I hear from job seekers every day who are struggling with a very frustrating issue - being seen as overqualified during their interviews. One of my recent clients, Parker, has been facing this exact challenge. Despite having the right skills and experience for the roles they want, Parker believes being perceived as overqualified is the reason they can't land one of those jobs.
The Risks of High Salaries
Based on Parker's situation, I need to make something clear - if you're currently making over $100k per year, or even $80k, you are at high risk of getting lowball job offers. That's because salary bands and expectations are shifting rapidly right now. In order to get paid what you're worth, you absolutely need a brand new strategy for job interviews.
Must-Have vs Nice-to-Have š¤·
The core issue here is that you can't just tell the interviewer "I can do this job" when they are considering hiring a lower-paid candidate. By saying that, you just made yourself a nice-to-have luxury item instead of a must-have necessity. A nice-to-have is like a BMW - it's fancy and packed with bells and whistles, but not a necessity. You need to be positioning yourself as the aspirin that cures their headache, not just a vitamin supplement.
Agitating the Pain
That's why at Work It DAILY, we teach our clients how to "agitate the pain" during interviews. You need to catastrophize the situation and really drive home all the problems and challenges the company will face if they don't have someone with your level of expertise solving them. Use vivid language to highlight the dangers and how you are the antidote they desperately need.
Unique Value Proposition š
Simply listing off your skills and experiences like a checklist of features won't cut it. You have to zero in on your unique value proposition and the distinctive solutions you'd implement. Speak their language and make it glaringly obvious how your background would pay dividends for their bottom line. That's what will make you invaluable, not just icing on the cake.
Continuously Evolving Strategy
The longer you're looking for a job with that higher income, the more critical it becomes to keep evolving your messaging and interview tactics. There are always hungrier, more affordable candidates entering the job market and trying to undercut you. You have to consistently up your game at articulating the ROI you'd deliver so that you stand out as irreplaceable, not overqualified.
