Why Can't I Get Any Job Interviews? Here's the Real Reason

If you’ve been job hunting for months with no interviews, I get it—you’re frustrated, discouraged, and maybe even wondering, “What am I doing wrong?” As someone who’s been in the trenches of career coaching for over 20 years, helping thousands of people land better jobs, I’ve heard this story countless times. The good news? It’s not that there’s something inherently wrong with you or your resume. The bad news? The way you’re looking for work is the problem. But don’t worry—we’re going to fix that. Let’s dive into what you’ve been doing wrong and how you can change your approach to start landing those interviews.

Why Applying Online Isn't Working đŸ–„ïž

Here’s the harsh truth: Applying for jobs online and waiting for the phone to ring is like buying a lottery ticket and hoping you’ll hit the jackpot. You’re putting your resume into a black hole where it’s unlikely to be seen by anyone who matters. Why? Because applicant tracking systems (ATS)—the software that scans resumes before they even get to a human—are working against you.

I’ve talked to job seekers who meticulously match their resumes to the job description, thinking that’s the golden ticket. But when I ask them how they’re actually applying for jobs, they admit they’re doing it all online, matching themselves 100% to the job posting. This might sound logical, but in today’s market, it’s a recipe for going unnoticed. With so many people applying through the same channels, your chances of standing out are slim to none.

The Secret Weapon: Back-Channeling đŸ€«

Now, let me introduce you to a technique I teach my clients: back-channeling. If you’ve never heard of it, that’s okay—most job seekers haven’t. But it’s a strategy that can take you from the bottom of the pile to the top of the hiring manager’s list.

Back-channeling is all about bypassing the ATS and getting your resume directly into the hands of the person who has the power to hire you. Imagine this: Instead of being just another faceless resume in the ATS abyss, you become the one resume that lands directly on the hiring manager’s desk. You’re no longer competing against hundreds of others—you’re in a league of your own.

How do you do this? It’s all about networking and research. Find out who the hiring manager is, connect with them on LinkedIn, or better yet, through a mutual contact. Send a personalized message that explains why you’re the perfect fit for the role and how your skills align with what they need. This isn’t about spamming people with your resume—it’s about making a genuine connection that sets you apart from the crowd.

The Power of Your Connection Story 📖

But wait—back-channeling is only half the battle. Once you’ve caught the hiring manager’s attention, you need to keep it. This is where your connection story comes in.

What’s a connection story? It’s your opportunity to explain why this job isn’t just another paycheck for you. It’s your chance to show why you’re genuinely excited about the role and how it aligns with your passions, values, and career goals. In a sea of candidates with similar qualifications, your connection story is what makes you memorable.

Let’s be real—hiring managers are tired of reading the same generic cover letters and resumes. They want to know what’s going to get you out of bed every morning and keep you motivated to do great work. Your connection story should highlight your unique reasons for wanting to work at that specific company. Maybe it’s their innovative culture, their commitment to social responsibility, or their industry-leading products. Whatever it is, make it personal and authentic.

For example, if you’re applying for a role at a nonprofit that fights hunger, your connection story might focus on how you’ve volunteered at food banks and how you’re passionate about making a difference in the world. If you’re going after a job at a tech startup, you could talk about how you’ve followed their journey from day one and are excited about the chance to contribute to their next big innovation. The key is to show that this job is more than just a job to you—it’s the job.
