Mastering the "Tell Me About Yourself" Question

Sam's journey to interview success is a testament to the transformative power of precise, effective communication—especially for introverts who dread the spotlight of job interviews. As an experienced career coach, I've encountered many clients like Sam, who find the prospect of talking about themselves daunting, often leading to rambling responses that undercut their chances. The pivotal moment for Sam came when he learned to master the art of answering one of the most common yet challenging interview questions: "Tell me about yourself?" Here's how we did it.

The Challenge: Overcoming Introversion in Interviews đź’Ş

Sam, by his admission, is deeply introverted. Talking about his achievements and articulating his professional journey in a concise and engaging way didn't come naturally to him. After failing to move forward in his last two job interviews, he identified his rambling response to the "Tell me about yourself" question as a critical weakness. This realization brought him to seek my help.

My Method: A Structured Approach

In our session, I introduced Sam to a method I've developed for answering interview questions effectively, particularly the open-ended "Tell me about yourself?" This approach focuses on structuring the answer in a way that is both informative and engaging, without overwhelming the interviewer or the candidate. The technique involves breaking down the response into specific, digestible parts:

1.What problem do you love to solve in your job? Briefly describe the thing you “nerd out” on that helps your employer make or save money. Think about how you alleviate a pain or problem that is critical to the success of the department and/or company.

2. How do you do it? Provide a high-level process of the steps you take to consistently solve for this problem as a way to show you have repeated success doing it.

3.What do you want to do next? Explain why you're excited about this opportunity and how it aligns with your career goals and your ability to leverage your skills on their behalf.

This structured approach gives the candidate a clear roadmap for their response, ensuring they cover all essential aspects concisely and confidently.

Tailoring the Method: Practice and Personalization 🧵

For Sam, practicing this method was crucial. We worked together to tailor his response, focusing on his unique strengths and career aspirations. By preparing a succinct narrative that flowed logically from his past experiences to his future ambitions, Sam was able to present himself as a well-rounded candidate with a clear direction. We also applied similar structuring techniques to other common behavioral interview questions, enabling Sam to prepare concise, impactful answers across the board.

Sam's Success: Confidence and Clarity

The result of Sam's hard work and our targeted coaching was remarkable. In his next interview, he delivered his "Tell me about yourself" response with confidence, clarity, and enthusiasm—without rambling. This strong start set the tone for the rest of the interview, allowing him to navigate even the most challenging questions with ease. Ultimately, Sam's improved interview performance led to a job offer, a milestone that marked a significant turning point in his career.

5 Reasons To Make SurveyJunkie Your Next Side Hustle

There are several reasons why someone might choose to have a side hustle as an online survey taker for SurveyJunkie. Here are five possible reasons:

1. Flexibility: Online survey taking allows for flexibility in terms of working hours. As a survey taker, you can typically choose when and where you want to complete surveys. This flexibility is especially beneficial for individuals who have other commitments such as a full-time job, studies, or family responsibilities.

2. Extra Income: One of the primary motivations for having a side hustle is to earn additional income. SurveyJunkie offers compensation to survey takers for completing surveys. While the income may vary depending on factors like survey length and complexity, it can be a convenient way to supplement your regular income or save up for specific goals.

3. Low Entry Barrier: Starting as an online survey taker usually has a low barrier to entry. SurveyJunkie, for example, allows individuals to sign up easily and start taking surveys without requiring specialized skills or experience. This accessibility makes it an attractive option for people looking to earn money without needing extensive training or qualifications.

4. Work from Anywhere: Online survey taking provides the opportunity to work from anywhere with an internet connection. Whether you prefer to work from the comfort of your home, a coffee shop, or while traveling, as long as you have access to the internet, you can take surveys and earn money. This flexibility can be particularly appealing for digital nomads or individuals seeking location-independent work.

5. Variety and Engagement: Participating in online surveys exposes you to a range of topics and provides an opportunity to share your opinions. This can be interesting and engaging for individuals who enjoy expressing their thoughts, providing feedback, or learning about different subjects. It can also serve as a way to stay updated on market trends, consumer preferences, and new products or services.
