Melanie is a recovering alcoholic. She just started a job at a company that has a big social culture. She loves the job, is paid very well, and there are a ton of career opportunities for high performers. However, it’s common for everyone to stay after work and have cocktails or go out together. She really likes everyone, but the moment she shared she doesn’t drink, she felt a shift from several employees. Being the new person in the office can be challenging.
All eyes on you when you walk into the office on the first day can be a little scary. It’s like being a kid again and having to navigate finding friends on the first day of school. It takes time to build connections and navigate how to work yourself into an already established group.
Take your time figuring out and observing how you can build your co-workers trust. Getting along with the people you work beside every day is important for the success of the work you all do.
Being able to make friends and build connections with your co-workers can be the difference between having a long healthy relationship at a company or wanting to leave after a few weeks.
