How to Get Your Mojo Back in Your Career
The past few years have been tough on all of us. The pandemic turned our world upside down, and the impact has been felt in our personal lives and careers. Itâs no surprise that many of us feel like we've lost our âmojoââthat spark and excitement we used to have for our work. Whether you're just starting to notice the signs of burnout or you're in the thick of it, there's hope. Itâs possible to reignite that passion and energy for your career. Hereâs how.
Acknowledge the Change in the Workplace
First, let's address the elephant in the room: the world of work has changed. The phrase "people don't want to work anymore" is thrown around a lot these days. But what does that really mean? From my experience as a career coach, I can tell you that people do want to workâthey just donât want to work the way they used to. The pandemic caused a shift in priorities, and many are now dealing with post-pandemic fatigue. This isnât just about physical exhaustion; itâs mental and emotional, too. Understanding that youâre not alone in feeling this way is the first step in getting your mojo back.
Create an Interview Bucket List
One of the most powerful exercises I recommend to my clients is creating what I call an âInterview Bucket List.â This isnât just any listâitâs a carefully curated selection of companies that truly excite you. Start by identifying at least 10, but preferably 20, companies that you absolutely love. These arenât just companies youâve heard are âgreat places to workâ; these are companies that you nerd out about. Whether itâs their products, services, customer base, or methodology, thereâs something about these companies that lights you up.
In the beginning, you might struggle to think of even one company. Thatâs okay. Itâs a sign that you havenât been trained to think about your career this way. But as you go about your daily lifeâwatching shows, using products, interacting with servicesâstart to pay attention to what catches your interest. What companies do you find yourself drawn to? What do you use every day that you canât live without? This exercise is all about rekindling that spark.
Dive Into the Details
Once you have your list of 20 companies, itâs time to dive deeper. In the second column next to each company, write down what it is that excites you about them. What makes them special in your eyes? As you start to identify these patterns, youâll begin to see what truly motivates and excites you. This becomes part of your career storyâyour âwhy.â
When you connect with employers from your list, youâre not just another candidate. Youâre someone who genuinely cares about what they do. This excitement and passion will shine through in your interviews, making you stand out from the crowd. Employers want to see that spark, that internal motivation to be part of their team. This is the key to getting your mojo back and landing a job that truly excites you.
Take Action and See the Results
The best part of this exercise? Seeing the results. I canât tell you how many times Iâve received messages from our members saying, âI just got an interview with a bucket list company!â That phrase alone lights me up because I know theyâve found something that truly excites them. And when they land a job with one of these dream employers, itâs even better.
Reigniting your mojo isnât about forcing yourself to feel excited about work. Itâs about discovering what genuinely excites you and taking steps to make that a part of your career. The Interview Bucket List is just one way to do that, but itâs a game-changer.
