First off, you should know not to go though the ATS or applicant tracking systems. This technology is designed to find a resume/applicant that is the exact match employers are looking for. Realistically, you are not their exact match, so you’re going to have to work around the ATS to get in the eyes of a hiring manager or recruiter. You can do this in two simple steps.

Step 1: Go around ATS and connect with people who would be your peers at the organization. Do some investigation, find employees at the company that you would potentially work with (steer clear of the hiring manager), and connect with them on LinkedIn.

Step 2: Tell a great connection story! Craft a message on LinkedIn to one of these new connections about how you feel connected to mission of the company. Tell them why you are inspired by the work their company does and why you are applying for this certain position.

After you send off your connection story, it’s time to wait for the recruiter or hiring manger to reach out about an interview.

This method is called back channeling, and it works wonders, especially for those who are trying to level up in their new job. Why does this work? Because once you send your message off, that employee is going to pass it on to the hiring manager, and then to the recruiter who will then set up an interview.
