Meme Of The Day
I Fired a Client Last Week. Here's What It Taught Me About Your Job Search.

I fired a coaching client last week. Literally fired her. And I'll be honest, it was the right decision for both the client and my team. But it also taught me something I want to share with you, because it might be the thing standing between you and your next job.
Two Days In, She Already Knew Better
Here's what happened. This client joined our program with 20 years of experience in operations and finance. She's an expert in her field, no question. And the first thing we did was run her resume through our resume tool.
She came back and said, "This won't work."
I asked her to walk me through why, and she told me the resume was too basic. Nobody would trust her or be impressed by her. She wanted it to look more sophisticated and fancy.
Why "Basic" Is Exactly the Point
I've been doing this work for over 20 years. I've been a LinkedIn Top Voice for more than 13 of them, and I get access to LinkedIn’s recruiter technology before the mainstream. Our resume tool has been studied by thousands of recruiters, and 74% of them prefer our format because it's so easy to skim.
That matters because recruiters are often not reading your resume in depth; they’re skimming it. It’s what I like to call the checkmark effect: they look at you and go check, check, check, check, check. This person has everything I need; I should contact them.
Where seasoned professionals go wrong is putting everything and the kitchen sink on the page. Nine-point font. Dense blocks of text. A little bit of everything so you look like a Jack or Jill of all trades. What recruiters see is someone who looks overqualified, expensive, and a little desperate. And if they spot one thing they don't need, you're out.
The goal is to niche you down, not dumb you down. There’s a big difference there.
The Question That Ended It
I tried to help her see it. So I asked, "If someone with no background in your field came to you and challenged your expertise in operations and finance, what would you say?"
She answered right away. "I would dismiss them, because obviously I know and they don't."
I thought, okay, she's going to get it now. So I said, "That's exactly what I'm trying to show you here."
And she said, "I just don't think it's the same thing."
That's when I knew. I told her this wasn't the right program for her, I refunded her money, and we parted ways.
The Real Cost of Being Right
I want to be clear that I wasn't offended. But I could see exactly where this was headed. She's going to keep doing the same things, and she's going to keep getting the same results.
She's also going after a job that pays around $15,000 to $20,000 a month. Every month she holds on to the belief that she knows better is another month of that paycheck she doesn't get.
Being an Expert Doesn't Make You an Expert at Job Search
Here's what I hope you take from this. You can be brilliant at your job and still be new at job searching, and that’s okay. Most people only do a job search every few years, and the rules change every time. What worked the last time you were in the market for a job probably doesn't work now.
So ask yourself an honest question. If you've been sending out the same resume, using the same approach, and getting nothing back, why are you still doing it? A good strategy means that it actually gets results. If it isn't, that's your signal to try something new.
That might mean letting someone show you what recruiters are actually looking for. It might mean simplifying the resume you're so proud of. It might mean learning how to comment and post on LinkedIn so recruiters find you, instead of hoping your application lands in the right pile. All of it takes being willing to say, "Maybe I don't know everything about this."
It’s not a sign of weakness; it’s the best and smartest thing you could do for yourself.
