Here’s what’s going on in the news (related to careers of course):

Recruiters sometimes receive hundreds of applications for a single job. How can you make sure they see yours?

Technology has made applying for jobs easier than ever before. (We know, we know it’s still a difficult process, but it’s easier than looking in newspapers or on job boards.) This means recruiters are receiving more and more applications, and they only have so much time in the day to read resumes. The help of applicant tracking systems greatly narrows down the amount of resumes a recruiter has to read, but what does that mean for the applicant?

It means you have to know how to to get your resume past the ATS. Not optimizing your resume for ATS will set you back and you won’t be hearing from recruiters. If the ATS doesn’t like your resume, it will be tossed right in the trash. Luckily, we have some ATS tips to help you and your resume out.

So lets say your resume gets past the ATS, what happens next? What will make the recruiter put your resume in the ‘yes’ pile?

Have you heard of the 6 second rule? This rule makes sure your resume is easy to be skimmed by a recruiter, but it also ensures they are seeing key information when they skim. Additionally, using proof statements in your resume can help grab the attention of the recruiter. These statements quantify your experience and are more impressive. When recruiters are impressed and interested, they will want to learn more about you and will move you ahead in the hiring process.

Optimizing for ATS, using proof statements, and creating a skimmable resume will put you in the right direction for landing in the ‘yes’ pile.

Todays Energy Booster recommendation comes from Work It DAILY’s Director of Community Dani Smart. She loves LMNT electrolyte powder for her hydration needs:

“It’s better than other electrolyte powders because it has NO sugar! Great for a workout or too much fun on a Friday night!”

Don’t blow your chances at getting a job because of a question about salary.

You should receive the salary you deserve, and sometimes that means negotiation. If you tell an employer a salary that is too high, you might not be considered for the position at all. So how can job seekers go about answering salary questions that won’t kick them out of the running or make them end up with an offer they don’t want.

Yesterday, we talked about creating your ideal salary range and how it can guide you through answering the salary questions on job applications. In one of her TikTok’s, J.T. recommends choosing a number within your salary range when the employer asks for a specific amount on an application. But there are other ways to go about answering these specific salary questions.

If you get lucky and there is an option on the application to insert a range, then you should obviously write in your ideal range. However, a lot of times applications only allow for one number. Like we mentioned earlier, your salary should be something you negotiate with the employer and having to offer one part of your range can make people feel like they will be stuck with that salary. That’s not necessarily the case, and you should be able to negotiate even if you do put a salary on the lower end of your range.

If you are still worried about it, then we recommend writing in the lowest or highest number you can. This will signal to the employer that you want to negotiate your salary. And better yet, if you can type in “negotiable” into the answer, then employers will really get your message.
