When proofreading your resume, it’s important to be on the look out for certain grammar mistakes.

Little things like punctuation and capitalization are crucial to have correct on your resume. You don’t want to be overlooked for a position because of silly grammar mistakes!

That being said, we thought it would be a good idea to talk about the most confusing words used on a resume. These words are quite often found in resume writing, but also happen to be frequently misused. They’re called compound modifiers and while the name might sound a little scary, they’re actually quite simple.

A compound modifier is a combination of words that is hyphenated and is used to describe something.

For example, let’s use the sentence: “He was a hands-on manager.”

In this case, “hands-on” is the compound modifier. Why? Because it is a combination of two words (‘hands’ and ‘on’), with a hyphen in between, and it’s describing something (the manager).

Unfortunately, compound modifiers can be a little confusing. Depending on where the compound modifier is in the sentence, determines if a hyphen is used or not.

Most people don’t remember every single grammar rule from their high school English classes (including recruiters and hiring managers), so if you make a compound modifier mistake, it won’t be the end of the world for you.

However, if you really want to stand out to employers, take a few minutes to learn the rules of compound modifiers and update your resume accordingly. If a hiring manager/recruiter notices that you know how to use them correctly, it only makes you more impressive!

Good luck!

In the video above, J.T. explains why it’s a waste of time to try and make your resume ATS friendly.

ATS (applicant tracking systems) are used by employers to screen candidates’ resumes for the positions they are hiring for. Many people believe they need to make their resumes ATS friendly, so they can get past the technology and into the eyes of a real person.

However, there is no real way to write a resume so it will get past the ATS. Why? Because there are over 100 different ATS systems and all of them parse the information on your resume differently. So what might work for one system, won’t work for another.

Sure there are some general tips and tricks to help your resume out, but there’s no guarantee that you will get past the technology.

So what should you do instead? You’ll have to watch the rest of the video to find out.
