Why You Shouldn't Put Benefits on Your Resume
The Age-Old Resume Question đ
As the CEO and head Career Coach at Work It DAILY, I often get asked questions about resumes and job search strategies. One question that recently came up from a client, Neva, was whether or not she should include her benefits on her resume. This is a great question, and one that I'm excited to dive into!
The Purpose of a Resume đ
A resume is a dry, fact-based document that outlines your professional features, such as years of experience, education, and technical skills. Recruiters and hiring managers use resumes to compare candidates "apples to apples" and find those who meet the specific qualifications they're looking for. Trying to "benefit up" your resume by including subjective information about your strengths and unique value can actually backfire, as it doesn't give the recruiter what they've been instructed to look for.
Where Benefits Belong đ
So, if benefits don't belong on your resume, where should you showcase them? The answer lies in two key places:
1. Your LinkedIn Feed
LinkedIn's algorithm has changed dramatically, and now searches your feed to determine if you're a match for job opportunities. Spending time crafting thoughtful posts about your accomplishments, insights, and what makes you a valuable asset can help you get discovered by recruiters looking for candidates like you.
2. Impact Evidence
In today's job market, it's crucial to create what we call "impact evidence" â materials that allow you to virtually demonstrate your benefits and value, just as you would in a job interview. One powerful tool for this is the McCoy mobile app, which enables you to record videos explaining your experience and achievements, and proactively share them with potential employers.
The Modern Job Search Solution âď¸
While resumes and LinkedIn profiles should focus on your factual credentials, there are better avenues to highlight your unique benefits as a candidate. By leveraging your LinkedIn feed and creating impact evidence, you can make a strong virtual first impression and increase your chances of landing an interview.
