Become the "Must-Have" Candidate: JT's Secret Interview Strategy
My Client's Dilemma 🧐
Wilbur was in a tough spot. He had a job interview coming up for his dream role, but he was feeling unsure about how to truly stand out and prove himself as the best candidate. Like many job seekers, he knew that simply being likable wasn't enough – he needed to demonstrate his ability to solve the company's problems and alleviate their pain points. That's when he reached out to me for guidance.
The Catastrophizing Technique 📝
After listening to Wilbur's concerns, I shared with him a powerful technique that I've been teaching my clients for years: catastrophizing. Now, before you get the wrong idea, this isn't about being negative or pessimistic. Instead, it's about anticipating potential challenges and showcasing your ability to overcome them.
Step 1: Identify the Requirements
The first step is to carefully review the job description and make a list of all the key responsibilities and requirements for the role. This will serve as the foundation for the next step.
Step 2: Catastrophize
For each requirement, ask yourself, "What could go horribly wrong if this isn't done correctly?" Imagine the worst-case scenarios – projects failing, deadlines missed, money lost. By catastrophizing, you're demonstrating your deep understanding of the role and the potential consequences of not fulfilling its duties.
Step 3: Offer Solutions
Now, here's where you shine. For each catastrophic scenario you've identified, provide a detailed explanation of how your skills, experience, and expertise will ensure that those disasters never happen. This is your chance to position yourself as the aspirin to the company's pain – the must-have candidate who can solve their problems.
Putting It Into Practice ✍️
During the interview, you'll want to strategically weave these catastrophizing scenarios into your responses. For example, if asked a behavioral question like "Tell me about a time when you had to handle X situation," you can respond with, "That's a great question, because if that's not done correctly, here are the three potential disasters that could occur..." Then, follow it up with a detailed account of how you've successfully handled similar situations in the past.
The Must-Have Mindset 🙌
By implementing this catastrophizing technique, you're subconsciously reminding the interviewer that you're not just a nice-to-have candidate – you're the must-have solution to their problems. And once you've secured that job offer, you'll be in the driver's seat to negotiate better compensation and benefits.
Your Next Step ➡️
Wilbur was thrilled with this advice and went into his interview feeling confident and prepared. He nailed the catastrophizing technique, and sure enough, he landed the job – and a higher salary than initially offered.
