Avoiding Job Scams: The Advice I Gave Misty (And You Need Too)
Misty's Devastating Story 😨
Misty came to me recently devastated after being the victim of an employment scam. She had gone through what seemed like a legitimate job hiring process—interviews, offer letter, the whole nine yards. But in the end, it was all a ploy by fraudsters to gain access to her bank account information. By the time Misty realized she'd been conned, the scammers had drained a huge amount from her life savings.
Hearing Misty's story shook me to my core. As a career coach, one of the most heartbreaking things is seeing people's dreams get shattered by callous criminals. With so many desperate for work, job scams are on the rise as lowlifes take advantage of that desperation. I knew after talking to Misty that I needed to share the guidance I gave her to help protect other job seekers.
Six Warning Signs a Job Opportunity Isn't Legit ⚠️
Throughout my years of coaching, I've seen the same patterns emerge again and again with fake job postings and shady employment offers. To avoid Misty's nightmare situation, watch out for these six red flags:
Mysteriously Missing Recruiter Info: A legitimate recruiter should have a full LinkedIn profile, company email, and other footprints you can verify online. If you can't find these basics, it's fishy.
Zero Company Credentials: Legitimacy also means the company has an official website, positive reviews, active social channels, and staff on LinkedIn. If this doesn't check out, it's likely a sham.
Unprofessional Communication: While not a dead giveaway, bungled grammar/spelling in official emails or documents is unlike a real corporation. It hints at exposing a broader lack of legitimacy.
Promises of Immediate Cash: Be wary if they claim to want to pay you a large sum upfront for equipment, relocation, etc. This "too good to be true" tactic is how many scammers hook victims.
Oversharing of Personal Info: Never provide sensitive information like your SSN, bank account numbers, or other personal data until you've established the absolute authenticity of the employer.
The Offer Seems Too Good: As desperate as you might be for a job, unrealistically high pay, excessive benefits, or flexibility should be a major red flag. If it seems too bountiful, it likely is.
