I've been a career coach for over 20 years. I've seen the job market shift with the internet, with outsourcing, and with automation. But I want to be honest with you: what's happening right now with AI is different. And there's one specific data point, straight from Anthropic, that stopped me in my tracks and made me rethink everything I tell my clients.

If you're a white-collar professional, a corporate employee, or anyone who works on a computer for a living, you need to understand this.

Here's the misconception I hear constantly: "AI is going to replace my job overnight." That's not quite how it works, and that misunderstanding is exactly what's putting people at risk.

What the data actually shows is that AI replaces tasks, not jobs. It slowly takes over one task, then another, then another. And by the time AI has absorbed the majority of what you do every day? Your employer starts doing the math. Why keep a full-time employee when a bot handles most of the work? This isn't fearmongering. It's a slow boil, and most professionals don't even realize it's happening to them.

Here's how I frame it for my clients: imagine a toolbox sitting in front of you. AI is just a set of tools. The person who thrives isn't the one who ignores them or fears them. It's the one who picks them up, masters them, and starts creating things no one else can.

That's the new competitive edge: becoming the brains behind the bots.

The professionals who will win in this era aren't just the ones who know how to use AI. They're the ones who bring deep expertise, strategic thinking, and real judgment to the table. And then use AI to amplify all of it. They're irreplaceable because they bring something the bots simply can't replicate.

I was at a conference recently and heard something that floored me: 60% of employees are sitting around waiting for their employer to tell them what to learn about AI. Meanwhile, most companies are saying that it’s not their problem. They're planning to figure out which AI tools they want, and then hire the people who already know how to use them. The workers who waited? They'll be left behind.

You are already seeing the market contract. Fewer white-collar jobs, more competition, higher expectations. This is not the time to wait and see.

This is the advice I'm giving every single one of my clients right now: start documenting your knowledge. Write down how you think. Capture your expertise, your process, your decision-making. Show the world, and future employers, that you are the person who can take a set of AI tools and do something remarkable with them.

Because here's the exciting part: there is a massive surge of opportunity coming for the people who get this right. These are the professionals who will make more money, land better roles, and have more career security than ever before, not despite AI, but because of how they use it.

The window to position yourself is open right now. But it won't stay open forever. Lean in, document your expertise, and become the kind of knowledge worker that every company is going to be searching for.
