3 Ways to Beat the Monday Blues as a Job Seeker

If you're job searching right now and yesterday felt like you were moving through wet concrete, you are not alone. I hear about this all the time from my clients, and it’s completely normal. I call it the "weekend flu." It’s that heavy, dread-filled feeling that creeps in Sunday night and hits you full force Monday morning. The kind that makes you want to pull the covers back over your head and pretend the job search can wait one more day.
It can't wait, friend. But I also get it. And I want you to know there's a way through it.
Here's what I share with my clients who are experiencing the weekend flu. I want you to have it in your back pocket for next Monday because, trust me, it'll come around again.
First: Stop Being So Hard on Yourself
I mean it. The first thing you need to do when that blue feeling hits is just...recognize it for what it is. It's a totally normal human response to coming off a weekend and having to re-engage with something as emotionally taxing as a job search. Even people who love their jobs deal with a version of this on Mondays. It doesn't mean something is wrong with you. It doesn't mean you're weak or lazy or falling apart.
You're not. You're just a person. And this is a genuinely tough job market right now, one of the worst I've seen in my 20 years of career coaching. So please, manage your expectations and give yourself a little grace. The feeling will pass. It always does.
Second: You Cannot, and Should Not, Do This Alone
Job searching is isolating by nature. You're spending hours applying into what often feels like a void, fielding rejection, and trying to stay motivated without any real external accountability. It wears on you. And the more you white-knuckle it alone, the worse you feel.
This is exactly why community matters so much. When people join Work It DAILY, they always tell me the same thing: they came for the coaching, but what completely surprised them was the community. All of a sudden, they don't feel embarrassed or ashamed anymore. They've got real people to talk to, people who get it, and that changes everything.
If you're not a Work It DAILY member yet, I genuinely want you to consider joining us. But at minimum? Find your person. Call a friend, reach out to a former colleague, connect with another job seeker. Just don't sit with this alone today. Talk to someone who's going to lift you up, not bring you down further. (And yes, who you talk to matters. If the people in your life tend to make you feel worse about your situation, that's a separate conversation we need to have.)
Third: Learn One New Thing—Just 30 Minutes
This one sounds almost too simple, and I know it. But hear me out.
When you're feeling stuck and defeated, your brain needs a win. Learning something new, even something small, triggers a little dopamine hit that genuinely shifts your mood. It fires up your brain. It makes you feel capable and productive again. And that feeling? It carries forward into the rest of your day.
Set a timer for 30 minutes. That's it. Watch a video, read an article, listen to something that relates to your career or job search strategy. You’ll be amazed at what 30 minutes can do for you.
If you’re looking for some inspiration, my team has put together a page of all of our free resources, which is a great place to start.
Use These Tips Next Monday
Here's the thing: yesterday happened, and hopefully you got through it okay. But Monday is going to show up again next week, and the week after that. So save this. Come back to it. Recognize the feeling, reach out to someone, and learn something small.
And if you want a place where you can actually do all three of those things, talk to people who understand, get coached, and keep learning, that's exactly what Work It DAILY is built for. Come check us out. We'd love to have you.
Go get ‘em!
