The 3 Signs Your Job Interview Is Going Well (And Why That Doesn't Always Mean You'll Get the Job)
As the newsletter manager here at Work It DAILY, I'm always on the lookout for the best career advice to share with our readers. I recently had a chat with our CEO and head career coach, J.T. O'Donnell, and we talked about whether there are ways to tell if a job interview is going well. She had a lot to say about this topic and even gave me 3 signs to look out for during an interview. Iâm excited to pass on what we talked about, so letâs get right into it.
The 3 Signs Your Interview Is Going Well
1. Positive Body Language and Facial Expressions
The first sign that your interview is going well is if you notice the interviewer(s) displaying positive body language and facial expressions. Things like nodding, smiling more, and leaning in as you speak are all good indicators that they're engaged and responding positively to what you're saying.
2. "Buy Signal" Questions
Remember, you're a "business of one"âa service provider selling your skills and experience to the company. So when the interviewer starts asking "buy signal" questions like "What kind of salary are you looking for?" or "How soon could you start?" it's a sign they're interested in moving you forward in the process.
3. The Interviewer Is Selling You on the Company
The third sign is when the interviewer starts talking about all the great things you'll get to do and experience if you're hired. They're essentially "selling" you on the company and trying to get you excited about the role. This is a good indication they see you as a strong candidate.
Now, here's the big "but": even if your interview is going incredibly well and you're getting all the positive signs, that doesn't necessarily mean you'll get the job. There are often multiple strong candidates, and the reality is that you just don't know what the other people interviewed brought to the table.
That's why the secret to acing your interviews is to invest significant time and energy into comprehensive interview prep. Understanding how to answer behavioral questions, what to ask the interviewer, and the overall interview process from the employer's perspective can give you a huge advantage.
Fortunately, we have a fantastic Interview Prep Course here at Work It DAILY that's literally a game-changer. Built from the recruiter and hiring manager's point of view, it's designed to help you steal the opponent's playbook and crush your interviews.
